Overhead camshaft and fingers

On some engines a finger or follower is interposed between the valve and camshaft lobe.

On engines with this arrange-ment the clearance is checked between the heel of the cam and the finger.

Step 1. Identify the inlet and exhaust valves.

2. Check the gap using a feeler gauge.

3. If the clearance needs altering, loosen the lock-nut, and
turn the stud anti-clockwise to close the gap, clockwise to enlarge it.

Overhead camshaft

*Ford uses this camshaft and finger arrangement on its single overhead camshaft engines (see illustration right). With this type of engine you might find it difficult in some cases to turn a lock-nut near the carburettor. Garages use a special crowsfoot’ spanner to get over this problem, but the lock-nut can be turned with an ordinary spanner if the car- burettor is removed.
