Windshield Wiper Service
General check
Your car's windshield wipers are powered by a small electric motor. To protect the windshield and give you maximum vision in rain, sleet, or snow, make sure the rubber blades are not cracked, brittle, or pulled loose from the blade retainer. Replacement blades are inexpensive and easy to install. The investment is small. The benefit is great;unobstructed vision through a clear windshield.
You can test wiper unit arm ten-sion by pulling them about an inch away from the windshield and then releasing them. They should snap back against the glass. If they do not, the tension may not be sufficient to effectively wipe the glass
clean. If the tension cannot be adjusted, you should replace the unit. Merely changing the blades will not solve the problem.
Most cars now have windshield washers. To clean a dry windshield while you are driving, first spray it with washer fluid, then turn on the wipers. This protects the glass against scratches. If temperatures drop below freezing in your area, be sure to put protective solvent in the washer container. It is available wherever auto products are sold.
The procedure for replacing wiper blades varies by make and model of car. Find the instructions for your particular car in the following pages, which are organized by make and model.

WIPER BLADES
All Ford Motor Company cars
These models use Trico and Anco blades, which come in two types, the bayonet type and the side-saddle pin type.
To remove a bayonet-type Trico blade:
1. Press down on the arm to un-lock the top stud.
2. Then depress the tab on the saddle and pull the blade from the arm.
To remove a bayonet-type Anco blade:
1. Press inward on the tab on the saddle.
2. Pull the blade from the arm. To reinstall the Trico- or Ancotype blade, slip it onto the wiper arm and push in until the latch engages the arm. Make sure the blade is properly engaged by at-tempting to pull it out.
To remove a side-saddle pin-type Trico or Anco blade:
1. Insert an appropriate tool such as a small screwdriver into the spring release opening of the blade saddle.

2. Depress the spring clip with the tool and pull the blade off the wiper arm.
To reinstall the blade, slip it onto the wiper arm and push in until the latch engages the arm. Make sure the blade is properly engaged by attempting to pull it out.
WIPER BLADE ELEMENT
1%9-78 Thunderbird, Ford full-size, and Mercury full-size, 1%9-72 Lincoln Continental except 1972 Mark IV, 1970-71 Fairlane, Torino, and Montego, 1971-73 Cougar and Mustang
To remove the rubber element on a Trico blade, squeeze the latch lock release and pull the element out of the lever jaws.
To remove the rubber element on an Anco-type blade, depress the latch pin and slide the element out of the yoke jaws.
To reinstallthe element on either type blade, insert it through the yoke or lever jaws until the latch pin or lock engages it. Make sure the element is engaged underneath all the claws of the blade.
WIPER ARMS
- Swing the arm and blade assembly away from the windshield to release the spring-loaded attaching clip in the arm from the pivot shaft.
- Insert a 3/32-inch pin through the pin hole to hold the wiper arm in the release position. Do not remove the pin until after the wiper arm has been reinstalled.
- Remove the arm by rocking it off the shaft. Do not pry it off using a screwdriver.
- Before reinstalling the arm, make sure the pivot shaft is in the park position. To reinstall the arm, position it on the shaft and push it into place. Remove the 3/32-inch pin to lock it on the shaft.
Note: The 1970 Cougar, Falcon, and Mustang, and the 1970-78

Comet, Granada, Maverick, and Monarch models do not have a hole in the wiper arm and blade assembly to install a pin. On these models:
- Swing the arm and blade assembly from the windshield, releasing the spring-loaded retaining clip from the shaft.
- Remove the arm and blade assembly from the shaft by rocking it off. Do not attempt to pry it off with a screwdriver.
- Before reinstalling the arm and blade assembly, make sure the pivot shaft is in the park position.
- To reinstall the assembly, hold it in the swung-out position and push it onto the pivot shaft. The arm will automatically lock onto the shaft.
1972-78 Montego, Torino, and Continental Mark IV, 1974-78 Lincoln Continental
- On 1973-78 Lincoln Continental and 1974-1978 Mark IV models, disconnect the windshield washer hose from the wiper arm.
- On all the above models, swing the wiper arm and blade assembly away from the windshield and move the side latch away from the pivot shaft. This will unlock the arm and hold the assembly away from the windshield.
- Remove the assembly by rocking it off the shaft. Do not try to pry the arm off the shaft with a screwdriver.
- Before reinstalling the arm and blade assembly, make
sure the pivot shaft is in the park position.
- To reinstall the assembly, position it on the pivot shaft. Then, while holding the arm slightly outward, slide the latch toward the shaft and carefully swing the arm onto the windshield.
- On 1973-78 Lincoln Continental and 1974-78 Mark IV models, reconnect the windshield washer hose to the wiper arm.
Mustang II and Pinto
- Swing the arm and blade assembly away from the windshield. Then, while holding the assembly in the swung-out position, pull the arm off the pivot shaft using an appropriate tool.
- To reinstall the assembly, hold it in the swung-out position and push the arm onto the pivot shaft. Then slowly swing the arm onto the windshield.

WIPER BLADES
1. Turn the wiper switch to "On" and move the blades and arms to a convenient location on the windshield by turning the ignition switch "On" and "Off" several times.
2. Lift the wiper blade off the glass, then depress the release lever on the center bridge and remove the blade from the wiper arm.
3. Using a screwdriver, depress the release button or lever on the end of the bridge. Then pull the blade through the end of the bridge.
4. To reinstall the blade, push the end opposite the one with the release latch into the bridge until the latch engages the bridge. If the wiper blade
is properly installed, all four bridge claws should be engaged and properly positioned on it.

5. Check the release latch fo complete engagement with the bridge after the blade is installed.
WIPER ARMS

Caution: Using a screwdriver or other tool to pry the arm off may distort it. Special tools are avail-able for removing wiper arms. Also, do not push or bend the spring clip at the base of the arm in an attempt to release it. The clip is self-releasing.
1. Place the wiper motor in the park position.
2. On cars with non-concealed wiper arms, position the special tool on the wiper arm assembly and lift off the arm by gently rocking the tool and arm unit.
3. To reinstall the arm on cars with non-concealed wiper arms, position the special tool in the same manner as before, then squeeze the tool and the wiper arm together, and instal the arm on the pivot shaft Make sure the arm and blade will return to the park position when the wiper switch is turned off.
4. On 1971-78 models with con-cealed wipers, lift the hood to gain access to them. Then lift the arm, pull out the latch, and using a rocking motion, remove the arm from the pivot shaft.

5. To reinstall the wiper arm on 1971-78 models with con-cealed wipers, pull the release latch outward and rock the arm onto the pivot shaft. If the arm is properly installed, it should just barely contact the stops at the bottom of the windshield.
